While there is a good deal of concentration on the literature of its neighbor Russia, many the general public do not yet recognize that Ukraine itself has a comprehensive cultivation as a country with a literary history. As far back in as the 11th Century, literature was starting to materialize as the developing Christian doctrine came into the land, shaping it as a cultural force. Even in those bygone eras,the beginning stages, the works of those from Ukraine had a certain flair that is identified by chroniclers living now who analyze those original literary feats. At this point in history, nearly all writing is seen as a means to catalog happenings and so 'chronicles' comprised the bulk of the written material in Ukraine then.

When Cossack culture showed up in Ukraine during the 16th Century ,there came around that period the technology of printing. During this time period there were various wars and empires trying to take the country like Poland and Russia. The Cossack lineage had their own culture and what they did was they raised epic poems to the masses and this made non-written poems into a really important art form of that period. By the 1800's, we would start to see book scribed in what is now considered as the modern tongue of Ukraine with the publication of a work called Eneyida by Ivan Kotliarevsky. This writer would come to be known as the father figure of this modern era of Ukraine's literature, however after this a artist and poet named Taras Shevchenko would rise to revive pride in the tongue and the culture's art forms via his own work. There would be many rises and falls for native books in the country as politics came to power and then fell away down through the years. When the language was banned, writers of the nation would print their books in another country. If there were regulations put on material they were permitted to write, then they would adjust to the rules just to maintain their written works.
